From Lawyer to Leading the Fight for a Purpose: Sarodj Bertin

Sarodj Bertin is a Haitian lawyer, activist and philanthropist. She is famous for her 2010 victory with Miss Haiti Universe. In addition to representing clients in human rights cases, she founded ‘Sarodj For a Purpose‘ a non-profit organization after realizing that becoming a public figure could serve as a positive way to help those less fortunate. She is a strong advocate for justice for the global advancement of human rights after having overcome the pains of having her mother murdered.

Sarodj is a name that has become synonymous with beauty and brains. With her good looks, natural charisma, and social media savviness, she has captured the hearts of audiences world-wide. However, few people know that before she became a public figure, she had a successful career as a lawyer.

“I loved my job as a lawyer, but I always felt like there was something missing in my life. I have always been interested in acting, storytelling, and later music. I felt like it was time for me to pursue my dream.”says Sarodj Bertin.

Interview:

Thank you Sarodj for taking the time to sit down with me! You are a human rights lawyer, musical artist, philanthropist, and former Miss Haiti Universe 2010, how do you maintain a work-life balance?

Sarodj Bertin: Everything I do, I do with passion. I give it my all. I think that’s the key to a healthy work-life balance. Prioritizing what’s important and making the time for it whether it be in my professional or personal aspect of my life.

·      Having accomplished so much in your life, what is your single greatest accomplishment?

Sarodj Bertin: My non-profit, “Sarodj For A Purpose” because it is the real purpose of my life!

·       You were born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and led a privileged life until the death of your mother – where you were forced to flee to Dominican Republic. How did this experience shape who you are?

Sarodj Bertin: I believe every experience we have in life, the good and bad shape our personality and makes us become who we are. I definitely had to become mature at an early age, since I no longer had my mother. I felt I needed to be strong and be there for my father and brothers. We are very united, and very supportive of each other. I am forever grateful for that.

·      Speaking of overcoming, there are other areas of your life where you are also very active. You have been pretty outspoken and involved in giving back, please tell us about ‘Sarodj For a Purpose’?

Sarodj Bertin: I created “Sarodj For a Purpose” in 2010, after becoming Miss Haiti Universe, I understood that the fact that I had become a public figure could be used in a positive way, so I decided to use my image to help others through my non-profit. Children are my passion, unfortunately I grew up without a mother, my mom Mireille Durocher Bertin was murdered in 1995, she is and will always be my model and inspiration.

Not having her physically with me, made me understand at a young age how important it is for kids to have that love and support from their parents, thank god I still have my father who has been the best ever. That is why I decided to dedicate most of my social endeavors to orphans, starting in my country Haïti, and then expanding to Dominican Republic.

Currently, my non profit “Sarodj For A Purpose” has different programs to help the kids have a better future!

Sarodj Bertin: Ultimate Cheveux has been my best ally, to keep my hair healthy and shiny during the transformation process.

·      Are there any projects you are working on currently that we can be on the lookout for.

·      We are very interested in diversity in the entertainment industry. As a former actress, now musical artist and social media influencer who has experiences in many parts of the industry, can you share with our readers about why you think it’s important to have diversity represented in music and how does that affect our culture?

Sarodj Bertin: I believe they both have a big influence on each other, what happens within the culture inspires art and what is done with art impacts our culture.

I was born in Haiti, and I grew up in Dominican Republic.  I have a lot of love for both countries and for both cultures. I am literally a mixture of cultures and flavors and that’s exactly what you can feel in my music.
